Hypnotherapy in East Sussex

What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a simple, down-to-earth, and common sense therapy. By relaxing, thinking positively, and picturing your goals, hypnosis can help you to progressively improve your habitual feelings and behaviour. Hypnosis is usually experienced as a pleasant state of deep relaxation in which the creative, intuitive part of the mind is dominant. This allows your imagination to focus on and absorb the self-empowering suggestions given to you by the therapist. Most people find the experience very relaxing and enjoyable. You are always in control and can come out of hypnosis at any time you want. Clinical hypnosis has been widely researched and proven to be an effective and safe therapy. Several major studies have shown that hypnosis coupled with cognitive behavioural therapy is the most effective treatment for many emotional and psychological problems. You should, of course, always ensure that you are treated by a registered clinical hypnotherapist.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
CBT is also an evidence based form of therapy which has been widely tested in clinical trials. It employs proven techniques for immediate symptom reduction and provides strategies to help you to change your perceptions and reactions to the world. You learn to identify irrational and/or unhelpful thinking patterns and beliefs which influence your emotions and behaviour negatively; it turns them around so that you gain a more positive and realistic attitude which enables you to change your behaviour. It is a goal focused method which allows you to measure your progress at every stage of treatment. I integrate cognitive behavoural techniques with hypnotherapy (CBH) to provide rapid, powerful and lasting results.

How long does Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH) take?
Unlike many other psychological 'talking' therapies, beneficial change usually becomes apparent within a relatively few sessions of CBH. Because CBH is structured and goal focused, you can monitor your progress towards your goals at every stage of the treatment. The number of sessions a client requires to achieve their goals varies depending on the problem they wish to overcome. We agree the number of sessions you are likely to require at the free initial consultation.

Will I be unconscious or asleep in hypnosis?
At no point will you be unconscious; in fact you will be aware of everything and be in control of yourself throughout the hypnotic process. You may feel sleepy or enter a pleasant dreamlike state, but you can always open your eyes if you want to.

Can anyone be hypnotised?
The only people who can't be hypnotised are those who don't want to be. If you are willing, then you can be hypnotised. Some people are more readily hypnotisable than others, but with practice everyone can experience hypnosis. If you trust your therapist, and you are motivated to work with them, then you will experience hypnosis. It simply requires the ability to relax, focus and use your imagination - all everyday skills which can easily be improved through practice.

Will I lose control in hypnosis?
No, even though you may feel deeply relaxed you will actually remain in full control. You are always aware of what is happening and can come out of hypnosis at any time you want. The notion of 'loss of control' generally stems from the misconception created by stage hypnosis during which people are apparently 'made' to perform all manner of (usually foolish) acts. However, participation in a stage act is an entirely voluntary process (so that 'permission' is already given to the hypnotist) and volunteers are aware of exactly what they are letting themselves in for.

What does 'evidence-based' mean?
'Evidence-based' means that CBH techniques are supported by valid scientific research and consistent with mainstream psychological theories. As a member of the Register for Evidence-Based Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy, I am bound by its Codes of Ethics and Practice and use only evidence-based techniques.
